67 Ophiuchi is a blue supergiant, one of those rare gems that lights Ophiuchus with a white-blue glare. Its B5 Ib class places it among the most luminous naked-eye stars: it radiates hundreds of times more energy than the Sun. The light grazing a human eye tonight departed there in the European Middle Ages, crossing more than a thousand years of dark before reaching the atmosphere.
Where it is and when to see it
67 Ophiuchi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
