μ Ophiuchi burns at 755 light-years, a blue-white B-class sun within the body of the Serpent Bearer — that vast figure holding the Serpent in both hands. A young, hot star, it belongs to the kind that lights the spiral arms and burns through life in a cosmic blink. The light now crossing our sky left the Ophiuchus region when the first medieval universities were rising in Europe.
Where it is and when to see it
Mu Ophiuchi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
