In southern Phoenix, the bird reborn from its ashes, pulses a white A-type variable at 251 light-years. Its light set out around 1774, when the American colonies were beginning to defy the British Empire and the first spark of their independence was being struck. Hotter than the Sun and an intense white, its brightness wavers gently —a discreet pulse amid the celestial plumage.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 8593 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
