What is HIP 85049
In the southern altar of Ara burns this yellow G-type star at 1,094 light-years. Its light —a colour kin to our own Sun's— set out around the year 930, when the abbey of Cluny was radiating reforms throughout Christian Europe and al-Andalus was living the splendour of the caliphate of Abd al-Rahman III. It is a distant sun whose glow seems to hold the silence of those high-medieval centuries.

HIP 85049 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
