What is HIP 85068
Within the ancient constellation of the Altar shines a G-type yellow star 395 light-years away. The light reaching the night sky tonight set out around 1631, in the thick of the Thirty Years' War across central Europe. It shares the Sun's colour and temperature but outstrips it in size and luminosity: a familiar flame and, at the same time, far vaster.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 85068 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
