What is HIP 84821
In ancient Hercules, the constellation devoted to the Greek hero, surfaces this white A-type star at 446 light-years. Its light set out when Philip II of Spain was commissioning the Escorial and galleons were crossing the Atlantic. Its surface easily passes seven thousand degrees, two thousand more than the Sun —a small difference in numbers, an abyss in colour and temper.

HIP 84821 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
