What is HIP 84431
Along the ribs of Hercules shines an orange K-type giant about 565 light-years away. Its light set out around 1461, when Louis XI ascended to the French throne and Europe was slowly closing out its Middle Ages. Cooler than the Sun yet far more luminous, its swollen surface radiates a gilded, unhurried glow, like an ember that has refused to die for centuries.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 84431 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
