What is HIP 82611
In Hercules —the hero of the twelve labours hanging in the summer sky— shines a K-type star, orange and dilated, cooler than the Sun yet also far larger. Its light set out at the start of the fourteenth century, when Dante was finishing the Divine Comedy and European guilds were raising Gothic cathedrals. It arrives now with the patience of one who has crossed seven silent centuries.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 82611 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
