37 Ophiuchi is an M-type red giant more than a thousand light-years away, meaning its intrinsic brightness must be enormous to remain visible to the naked eye from such a distance. It hangs in vast Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer that embraces the celestial equator and through which the Sun passes each November. Its light has been travelling since before the first European cathedrals were built.
Where it is and when to see it
37 Ophiuchi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
