In Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, burns this blue-tinged B-class star, far hotter than the Sun and more than eleven hundred light-years away. Its light set out around the year 909, in the depths of the Middle Ages, when the Christian kingdoms of northern Iberia were slowly advancing toward the line of the Duero. More than a millennium later, that severe blue crosses the Milky Way's frontier and arrives here.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 83635 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
