What is 24 Ophiuchi
24 Ophiuchi is a white star about three hundred and four light-years away, within the vast Ophiuchus —the serpent-bearer the modern zodiac almost claims as its thirteenth sign. Its A type signals a hot atmosphere and a clean glow, befitting stars still in full stable life. Few know that Ophiuchus witnessed, in 1604, the last supernova seen by the naked eye in our galaxy.

24 Ophiuchi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
