More than twenty-six hundred light years separate this blue B-type giant from the earthbound observer. It dwells in the southern Altar constellation and its light departed when Babylon was falling to Cyrus the Great. What we see is the ancient echo of a vast, hot star, several dozen times more massive than the Sun and thousands of times more luminous.

HIP 82171 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
