This red light left the Altar barely 29 years ago, when the Berlin Wall was falling and the world was learning the word «internet» beyond the laboratories. It is a dwarf M-type star, cool and reddish, similar to most of those that populate the galaxy. It lies so close that it could almost be counted among the Sun's neighbours, though its muted glow conceals it even under clean skies.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 84720 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
