22 Scorpii is a blue sun barely ten million years old, set in the body of the Scorpion, with four and a half solar masses and roughly 600 times the Sun's luminosity. It spins at 169 km per second at its equator —fast enough to flatten its shape— and burns in the deep blue typical of type B3. At 413 light-years, its magnitude-4.79 glow trails the Scorpion's tail through northern summer nights.
Where it is and when to see it
22 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
