Its surface, tens of thousands of degrees hotter than the Sun's, radiates intensely blue light rich in ultraviolet —the unmistakable seal of young, massive stars—. The light we sense today set out around 1722, when Bach was publishing the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier.
Where it is and when to see it
12 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
