What is Chi Andromedae
Chi Andromedae is a yellow G8 giant 250 light-years away, an older sister of the Sun that has already exhausted its core hydrogen and swollen into its slow stellar old age. It is a spectroscopic binary with an estimated orbital period of 20.8 years and notable eccentricity. It shares the sky with the spiral galaxy M31, the most distant object visible to the naked eye from Earth: a relative neighbour in a constellation open to the infinite.
Where it is and when to see it
Chi Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
