What is Epsilon Lupi

Epsilon Lupi is a hot blue star of type B set in the body of the Wolf, about 512 light-years away. It belongs to the Scorpius–Centaurus association, the nearest gathering of young massive stars to the Sun, all born only a few million years ago from the same parent cloud. Its deep indigo colour is the signature of a surface above twenty thousand degrees —destined to a brief, brilliant life.

Where it is and when to see it

Epsilon Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it never rises above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 5° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 79° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 45° N.

It ranks no. 5 in brightness among the 74 stars of Lupus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpha Lupi, the brightest: it lies about 8° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 510 years ago.
