Mu Lupi looks like a single blue dot from Earth, but it is a system of three hot stars and a barely detected brown dwarf, all caught in the same gravitational dance 336 light-years away. The main one is a B8 dwarf with a searing surface, thousands of times hotter than a bonfire. The shadow of the southern Wolf hides this small knot of siblings.
Where it is and when to see it
Mu Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
