In the Serpent, the only constellation split in two by the Serpent-Bearer, shines a yellow star, a distant cousin of the Sun. Its light began its journey 357 years ago, when Vermeer was painting rooms flooded with light in Delft and the Royal Society of London was being founded. Similar in temperature to the Sun, it belongs to that quiet family of stars that, in some other corner of the galaxy, someone might call sun.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 74896 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
