Kappa-1 Lupi is the principal of a visible pair whose two stars stand 1,450 astronomical units apart—farther than the entire span of our planetary orbits. A blue-white star spinning fast enough to spin off a veil of gas, it travels with the Hyades stream, the same flow that carries the famous Taurus cluster. Its light arrives from 180 years past.
Where it is and when to see it
Kappa 1 Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
