What is 49 Ceti
49 Ceti is a white A-type star burning at 194 light-years inside the celestial whale, and it holds something extraordinary: around it persists a disk of gas and dust, primordial leftovers of planetary formation that radio telescopes have detected in carbon monoxide. It is one of the most studied examples of a debris disk with residual gas, a rarity for a star already entering its maturity.
Where it is and when to see it
49 Ceti lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
