In the small constellation of Circinus flickers a blue B-type star, a variable with an elegant beat. Its light departed fourteen hundred and six years ago, when Irish monks were copying manuscripts in their scriptoria and saving classical culture from oblivion. Far hotter and livelier than the Sun, it throbs strongly, like a blue ember breathing in the midst of cold. Each flash carries the golden dust of that memory rescued by quill.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 72438 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
