A variable yellow-white star in Circinus, southern and seldom visited. Its light set off 1648 years ago, around the year 378, when the Goths were defeating the emperor Valens at Adrianople and the Roman order was starting to crack. An F-type, hotter than the Sun, with brightness shifting slightly over time. A faint vibration coming from a southern corner that rarely surfaces on charts.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 72773 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
