What is HIP 71419
In the distant constellation Lupus glows a K-type orange giant 700 light-years away. Its light began its journey around 1326, in the late European Middle Ages, when the first tremors that would precede the Black Death were already being felt. Cooler than the Sun yet far larger, it is an orange flame anchored deep in the southern sky.

HIP 71419 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
