What is 106 Virginis
106 Virginis carries the highest number in the Virgin, that vast zodiacal constellation that houses thousands of galaxies from the nearest cluster to the Milky Way. It is an orange K-type giant some 625 light-years away, an old star whose golden glow contrasts with the distant blue of the galactic swarm. Its light set out around the fourteenth century, in the heart of the European Black Death, and now arrives discreetly among more famous constellations.
Where it is and when to see it
106 Virginis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
