What is 1 Boötis
1 Boötis opens the numbering of the Herdsman, that northern human figure who seems to guide Ursa Major across the sky. It is a white A-class star about three hundred and twenty-eight light-years away, removed from the famous glow of Arcturus —the orange giant that rules the constellation. Its modest brightness plays a quiet but symbolic role: being the first in the catalogue of one of the sky’s oldest constellations.
Where it is and when to see it
1 Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
