What is 75 Virginis
75 Virginis is a K-type orange star roughly 515 light-years away in the broad realm of the Virgin, one of the largest constellations in the sky. Its warm reddish tone contrasts with the brilliant blue of Spica, her famous neighbour to the south. The light reaching us today set out at the beginning of the sixteenth century, in the years of the first transatlantic voyages —a glow that has crossed space while the world was being redrawn below.
Where it is and when to see it
75 Virginis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
