What is HIP 64122
In the discreet centre of Virgo shines an orange K-class giant, lying a little over three hundred light-years away. Its coppery light departed when the first steamboats were ploughing the Seine and, in Vienna, Beethoven was preparing his last symphonies. It is one of those ageing stars, cool at the surface yet swollen to several times the Sun's size, which will never again return to the calm of their youth.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 64122 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
