What is 6 Virginis
6 Virginis is an orange K0III giant about 171 light-years away, set within the slender figure of the Virgin. Its radius is five times the Sun's and its luminosity around sixteen times solar, yet its surface burns cooler —near 4,940 K— giving it a serene orange tint. It approaches us at about nine kilometres per second, sliding its light past the densest corner of the Virgo galaxy cluster.
Where it is and when to see it
6 Virginis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
