Gamma Muscae beats within the small southern constellation of the Fly, that creature charted by Dutch navigators in the seventeenth century. A blue B-type star, it is also a Beta Cephei variable: its surface pulses with a barely perceptible heartbeat every few hours, a kind of stellar breathing. From three hundred and twenty-five light-years away, its light tells a rhythmic story.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma Musca lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
