In the small southern Musca shines an orange star whose light crossed 1,194.9 years to reach us: it left around the year 831, when the Christian kingdoms of northern Iberia were waging their first skirmishes in La Rioja. It is a luminous class K star —an orange giant whose energy comfortably exceeds that of the Sun despite its warm, deceptively gentle hue.

HIP 64820 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
