ε Chamaeleontis is a hot blue star embedded in a small young stellar association that bears its name —one of the closest sites of stellar formation to the Sun. There, just over three hundred light-years away, dozens of newly ignited suns share a molecular cradle. Its cold light illuminates the discreet Chameleon, a constellation traced by the explorers of the southern seas.
Where it is and when to see it
Epsilon Chamaeleon lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
