Gamma Chamaeleontis is the dominant light in a small circumpolar constellation known only to southern skies. An evolved red giant, 78 times the Sun's radius and nearly nine hundred times its light, with a surface as cool as embers slowly fading. It pulses with the faintest variability, 418 light-years away, like the barely perceptible heartbeat of a cosmic Chameleon that few have ever contemplated.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma Chamaeleon lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
