Variable starIts story
This yellow-white variable does not really belong to the Milky Way: it lies more than 326,000 light-years away, on the outskirts of Centaurus, drifting through the haloes of neighbouring galaxies. Its light set out when the first Homo sapiens still shared the European continent with Neanderthals. It arrives now, flickering, like a coded message from another galactic neighbourhood.
