What is 33 Ceti

33 Ceti is an orange giant 768 light-years away, glowing faintly at magnitude 5.97 in the long body of the Whale. At that distance, the light we see tonight set out when the Iberian kingdoms were living through the close of the Middle Ages. Its K type betrays an aged star, with a surface cooler than the Sun's yet swollen to dimensions that comfortably exceed our own.

33 Ceti lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 41° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 52° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 54° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 88° S.
