On the Lion's flank, a warm K-class star shines at 197 light years — a relatively close neighbour within our own galactic arm. The light now crossing the European spring took leave around 1811, during the Peninsular War, when the Cortes of Cádiz were drafting their Constitution. Orange colour, no pulsing: a silent companion to Regulus, far from the spotlight.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 54863 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
