In Leo glows a rare red giant 1,965 light-years away, a cold and enormous ember silhouetted against the spring sky. Its light set out during the height of the Pax Romana, as the Empire stretched under Hadrian and Rome was raising its most perfect temples. A class-M sun, swollen hundreds of times the size of ours and far cooler, it pulses with a deep red gleam that sets it apart at once from its white neighbours.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 47943 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
