In majestic Carina, a blue star shines at 313 light-years. Its light began its journey around 1713, when the Treaty of Utrecht was redrawing the European map and Philip V was settling on the Spanish throne. Class B, its surface far exceeds the Sun's temperatures and emits much of its radiation in the ultraviolet. To the naked eye it looks like a faint speck, yet it is a star considerably hotter and more luminous than our own.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 54767 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
