What is HIP 40429
Another white sentinel in Carina, of type A, hotter and more luminous than the Sun. Its light has been travelling some two hundred fifty-three years: it was already on its way when shipyards still launched wooden frigates and electricity was barely a parlour curiosity. It shines with that limpid clarity reminiscent of fresh-fallen snow, a small beacon set into the keel of Argo, the mythic vessel that cartographers later broke apart into several southern constellations.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 40429 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
