Its story

Above the keel of Carina burns a white star, young and silent. Its light set out some 308 years ago, around 1718, when Bach was composing his first cantatas in Köthen and Peter the Great was modernising Russia. Hotter than the Sun and faintly blue-tinged, it looks carved from kindled ice over the southern mantle.
