Antlia is a modern constellation, invented by Lacaille in the 18th century to honour the air pump of the laboratory. Inside its mechanism shines this white A-class star, cool and precise, 518 light-years away. Its light began its journey when Leonardo was still painting in Italy and the Catholic Monarchs were consolidating Castile. A crystalline note within an instrument drawn among stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 54173 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
