What is 60 Leonis
60 Leonis is a white A-type star in the heart of the Lion, hot enough to cast a recognisable blue-white glow through a telescope. It shines from just over a century away, within the patch of sky that Babylonian observers already identified as a feline figure. The light reaching us now departed when the trenches of the First World War were still smouldering.
Where it is and when to see it
60 Leonis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
