What is Kappa Leonis

κ Leonis lies close to the Lion's head, in a region of the firmament crossed each November by the Leonids, one of the most spectacular meteor showers when it reaches its cyclic peak. An orange K-type giant some 201 light-years away, her amber tone reveals a cool, distended atmosphere.

Kappa Leonis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
