What is HIP 53778
Within the small constellation of the Cup, Crater, glows a K-type orange giant 465 light-years away. The light reaching the night sky tonight set out around 1561, when the looms of Flanders were at their peak and the first great cartographic compilations were being printed. Cooler than the Sun yet far larger, it fills with amber stillness a corner of the sky devoid of brilliant stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 53778 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
