In Crater, the cup spilled by the crow in myth, beats a red M-type giant, far cooler than the Sun yet immense in size and luminosity. Its light took some 662 years to cross space: it set out around 1363, in the midst of the Hundred Years' War between France and England and while Europe was trying to recover from the Black Death. A cosmic ruby now settles at the bottom of the cup.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 53723 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
