Variable starIts story
56 Leonis is a red M-type giant about 389 light-years away, also catalogued as the variable VY Leo. Its brightness drifts slowly between magnitudes 5.7 and 6.0, right at the edge of unaided sight. Its deep hue comes from a cool, swollen photosphere —a star in a very advanced phase of its evolution that, on any given night, may pulse a little dimmer or a little more alive.
