Another orange ember in Carina, this time very distant: a K-type star whose light has been crossing the void for more than fourteen hundred years. It set out around the sixth century, when Justinian was ruling Byzantium and promulgating the Corpus Iuris Civilis that would shape European law. Cooler and more golden than the Sun, its glow reaches us filtered through fourteen centuries. To look at it is to see the light of an age when Latin was still sung across the Mediterranean basin.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 53334 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
