On the keel of Carina shines a yellow-white star, a close cousin of the Sun yet a touch hotter. Its light crossed some 313 years before reaching us: it set out around 1713, when the Peace of Utrecht was signed and Philip V was acknowledged as King of Spain. Its cream tone rests, serene, upon the unfurled sails of the ancient Argo.

HIP 50993 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
