Its story
44 Hydrae is an orange K-type giant about 798 light-years away, threaded along Hydra —the largest of the 88 modern constellations. Its warm cast reveals a star past its prime, swollen far beyond its former main sequence. Its light departed in the early thirteenth century, when the first Latin universities were only beginning to debate the nature of the firmament.
