Its story
50 Hydrae lives in the winding body of the longest constellation in the sky, 218 light-years away. It is a K-type orange giant that has moved from maturity into that amplified, quieter phase of old stars. When the photon now reaching us set out, Europe was still adjusting to the Gregorian calendar. It glows softly but faithfully, like an ember refusing to fade.
